Currently tests have been developed which offer genetic testing for individuals who may carry genes for metabolic disorders or elevated risk for certain cancers.
This testing is designed to look for inherited medical conditions that are carried as a recessive (or "hidden) gene and may not have been previously identified in the family. Ideally testing for these disorders can be performed before becoming pregnant, as steps can be taken to reduce the changes of a baby having the disorder if the risk is identified before conception! However, testing may also be preformed early in obstetric care. Please refer to our planning for pregnancy page for a list of disorders we can test for.
Tests for genetically inherited cancer gene mutations including BRCA 1 & 2 and Lynch Syndrome can be performed on blood sample. Your health insurer may require a consultation with a genetic counselor prior to authorizing these tests.
