In Office Procedures

The annual well-woman exam is the cornerstone of preventative medicine in all women's lives.

It includes a detailed history and physical exam and will address lifestyle concerns such as appropriate exercise and diet, as well as cancer screening. Throughout a woman's life the topics covered and screenings recommended will change.

According to the current guidelines for cervical cancer screening, the ASCCP (American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology) recommends that pap smears include testing for high risk HPV. Depending on age, testing may be concurrent with the pap or may only be done if abnormal cells are detected. The recommended interval for screening may be extended beyond a yearly pap, but the annual exam is still recommended yearly even if a pap is not planned.

Mammograms are done for breast cancer screening and evaluation of breast disorders. The age and interval for screening will depend on your history and evaluation with your provider. A DEXA scan for bone health is usually recommended to start at age 65 unless other risk factors are present. Colonoscopy is generally recommended to start at age 50 and screening with in-office tests may be indicated based on symptoms or clinical findings.
